Psalms 91 Commentary

Please choose a passage

The Lord is the Living God of proven protection and sure strength upon whom the faithful may fully lean.

God is the Deliverer who overcomes evil with good. It is the unyielding faithfulness of the Lord Himself that creates this protective environment for those who abide in His care.

Even in the face of death, we can know that we are in God’s hand, and He has our best interest at heart.

Because of the Lord’s providential care, those faithful to Him will overcome all manner of adversity. If difficulty comes into our lives, God has authorized it, and we can trust that it is for our best. His ministering spirits see to our care and protection.

If there were an "official" ranking of the 10 most popular psalms in the Bible, Psalm 91 would likely be included. Its appeal in providing comfort that God is our keeper and protecter spans across the centuries to the present. It is repeatedly referenced in classical and contemporary literature. Psalm 91 has been the inspiring motif behind numerous works in the visual and musical arts (including digital media) worldwide.

This second psalm within the Fourth Book of the Psalter (Psalms 90–106) provides no indication with respect to authorship. Tradition ascribes the poetic work to David. The psalm is commonly linked to liturgical purposes and often paired with Psalm 90 in a thematic journey of worship from the New Year to the Lenten season. The end-point of the worshipful experience is the affirmation of total confidence in the Lord's unfailing provision for the faithful.
