Isaiah 11:10 meaning

All people, from every nation, find hope in the Messiah who arises from Jesse’s line.

The prophet Isaiah proclaims, “Then it will come about in that day That the nations will resort to the root of Jesse, Who will stand as a signal for the peoples; And His resting place will be glorious.” (v.10) This hopeful statement anticipates a time when all peoples—not just Israel—will gather under the leadership of the “root of Jesse.” Historically, Jesse lived in Bethlehem around the 10th century BC. He was the father of King David, and through David’s line, God promised to bring forth a future Messiah to redeem His people (2 Samuel 7:12-13). This verse speaks of someone who has both humble origins in Jesse’s household and exalted significance for every nation.

By referencing the “root of Jesse,” Isaiah suggests a descendent who would rise from Jesse’s lineage. From a New Testament perspective, this has special application to Jesus (Romans 15:12). Though Jesus descended from David’s line, He is also the ultimate King who surpasses any earthly monarchy, drawing all nations to Himself. The phrase, “Who will stand as a signal for the peoples” (v.10), pictures a banner lifted high, guiding people from every background to unite under God’s Messiah. The final part of the verse, “And His resting place will be glorious” (v.10), points to a future kingdom marked by divine peace and God’s abiding presence.
