Isaiah 24:15 meaning

Isaiah 24:15 reminds God’s people to worship Him in every land, affirming His lordship and worldwide reign.

The prophet declares, “Therefore glorify the LORD in the east, The name of the LORD, the God of Israel, In the coastlands of the sea” (v.15). Isaiah’s call to “glorify the LORD” arises from his larger message of judgment upon the earth: though chaos and upheaval will come, honor and reverence for God should remain steadfast. The command to exalt God specifically “in the east” indicates that even distant regions must devote themselves to the worship of the Almighty. In Isaiah’s historical context (approximately 700 BC), such an appeal underscores God’s sovereignty over all nations, not just Judah or Israel (Isaiah served as a prophet during the reigns of multiple kings of Judah, roughly between 740 BC and 680 BC).

Isaiah continues by referencing “the coastlands of the sea” (v.15). These coastlands most likely refer to areas along the Mediterranean—extending from what is modern-day Israel to lands further west—emphasizing that the Lord’s praise is not confined to one territory. These regions included bustling trade routes and port cities, a reminder that God’s glory should be declared both near and far. By addressing places beyond Jerusalem, Isaiah shows that the Lord’s works are meant to be proclaimed universally, a theme echoed in the New Testament when Christ sends His disciples to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19). Though Jesus is not directly mentioned here, this verse reveals a glimpse of the universal worship of God that Jesus would later affirm.

Through the phrase “the God of Israel” (v.15), the verse also points back to the covenant relationship God established with Abraham and his descendants, dating to around 2000 BC (Genesis 17). This covenant lineage would eventually include King David (reigning around 1010-970 BC), from whom the Messiah would come. Isaiah’s words highlight both the Lord’s particular love for His chosen people and His call to the ends of the earth to worship Him. This sets the stage for the ultimate fulfillment in Christ, whose gospel is proclaimed across every continent (Acts 1:8).
