Proverbs 15:24 meaning

Wise choices lift us closer to God and protect us from ruin.

When King Solomon, who reigned in Israel from 971 BC to 931 BC, proclaims, “The path of life leads upward for the wise That he may keep away from Sheol below” (Proverbs 15:24), he highlights that following God’s wisdom elevates our moral and spiritual perspective. The “path of life” evokes a journey that grows our understanding in righteousness, moving us toward the Lord’s way rather than descending into destructive patterns. Solomon offers a contrast: living in reverence to God leads a person upward, shielding them from harmful end results that come with rejecting wisdom.

Here, Sheol represents the abode of the dead, a place of separation and darkness (a realm often translated as the grave or underworld), underscoring the passage’s emphasis on turning away from spiritual ruin. When we embrace wisdom that honors God, our hearts and minds are guarded from moral corruption, and instead we are drawn upward to experience a fuller, more fruitful life.
