Proverbs 22:16 meaning

God’s provision is not secured by oppression or bribery; it is known through honoring Him and caring for others.

King Solomon, who reigned as the third king of Israel from 970 to 931 BC, is traditionally credited with compiling the sayings in the Book of Proverbs. In his wisdom literature, Solomon frequently addresses themes of justice, generosity, and accountability, offering practical guidance for living in a manner that honors God. Thus we read in Proverbs 22:16: He who oppresses the poor to make more for himself or who gives to the rich, will only come to poverty (v.16). By highlighting both the negative treatment of the poor and the misguided flattery or bribery of the wealthy, Solomon underscores the moral and practical dangers of misplaced priorities.

Oppressing the poor reflects a disregard for God’s heart, since Scripture consistently teaches that the Lord cares about those who are vulnerable (Matthew 25:40). A system that exploits the weak eventually proves unsustainable, echoing Solomon’s warning here. Likewise, giving to the rich in a self-serving way—perhaps for personal gain or social leverage—reveals a motivation that can lead to spiritual and financial ruin. Jesus Himself taught that chasing earthly treasures comes at the cost of true riches in heaven (Matthew 6:19-20). This verse cautions against short-sighted schemes that overlook divine justice.
