Psalms 67:4 meaning

All nations can rejoice in God’s righteous reign.

When the psalmist declares, “Let the nations be glad and sing for joy; For You will judge the peoples with uprightness And guide the nations on the earth” (v.4), he is calling all the peoples of the world to rejoice in God’s righteous rule. This verse emphasizes the psalmist’s conviction that God is both supremely just and benevolent, capable of administering judgment in perfect fairness. It also reveals that the Lord’s desire is to shepherd every nation, pointing to His inclusive love for all humanity. The idea of God guiding not just Israel but every nation on earth speaks to the universal scope of His plan and compassion, an idea echoed elsewhere in Scripture, such as when God through Christ welcomes Gentiles into fellowship (Romans 15:9-12; see also).

The phrase “judge the peoples with uprightness” underscores God’s impartial character. Ancient kings and leaders often acted with limited levels of justice or fairness. By contrast, the psalmist depicts the Lord exercising His rule with perfect equity. This assures the faithful that all people—even those scattered among the nations—are equally under God’s watchful and righteous governance. It is a reminder of His ultimate sovereignty, and that in His kingdom, no one is overlooked or disregarded.

Furthermore, “guide the nations on the earth” reinforces that God’s authority extends across every boundary and cultural barrier. While the covenant community of Israel was uniquely chosen to shine God’s light to the world, His sustaining hand and moral law reach all peoples (Genesis 12:3; Psalm 67:2; see also). The psalmist’s call for “the nations” to rejoice reflects the belief that this guidance will bring blessing and peace, uniting all humankind in gratitude and praise for the Creator who cares for them.
