2 Samuel 17:15 meaning

This verse highlights how God can use loyal friends and wise counsel to protect His people.

Then Hushai said to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, “This is what Ahithophel counseled Absalom and the elders of Israel, and this is what I have counseled.” (v.15) This verse speaks of a key moment in King David’s history, around 1000 BC, when Absalom rebelled against his father in Jerusalem. Hushai was a loyal confidant to David who had feigned allegiance to Absalom in order to thwart the counsel of Ahithophel, one of David’s former advisors who had joined Absalom’s cause. Zadok and Abiathar, both priests serving under David, were instrumental in relaying information about Absalom’s plans back to David. Their location, likely in or around Jerusalem, served as a strategic place of communication and alert.

By addressing Zadok and Abiathar, Hushai ensured that David would be aware of what Ahithophel had recommended, as well as what he himself suggested as a counterstrategy. In doing so, Hushai aimed to protect David from being ambushed by Absalom’s forces. This network of communication highlights a broader biblical theme of hidden yet faithful support, reflecting the truth that God often uses wise counsel and covert efforts to accomplish His purposes (see also the wisdom Jesus encourages in Matthew 10:16).

The verse also underscores how God’s sovereignty works through complex human relationships. Hushai’s faithfulness contrasts sharply with Ahithophel’s betrayal, much like loyalty and betrayal appear in the New Testament with Judas contrasted against Jesus’s disciples (John 13:2). Though David faced betrayal, the Lord provided Hushai’s counsel and the support of Zadok and Abiathar to preserve the kingdom’s rightful leadership.
