Deuteronomy 28 Commentary

Please choose a passage

Moses continued to outline the script for the ceremony to be performed once they had success taking Canaan. This part urged the Israelites to obey their covenant partner, Yahweh, in order that they may be blessed beyond measure in the land of Canaan, which was God’s promise to them if they followed faithfully the terms of the agreement.

Moses continues with the series of blessings. He now tells Israel that the Suzerain God will defeat their enemies, establish Israel as a holy people to Himself, and give them a leadership position over all the peoples of the earth, provided that they obey the terms of the covenant.

Moses spells out the curses that will fall on the Israelites if they fail to obey their Suzerain (Ruler) God.

Moses elaborates on the curses the Suzerain (Ruler) God will bring on Israel if they fail to abide by His covenantal laws. These curses are in the form of natural disasters, diseases, and agricultural failures.

The Israelites would constantly suffer military defeat if they fail to follow the LORD.

The LORD will afflict the Israelites with various kind of diseases if they fail to obey the covenant.

Moses tells the Israelites that their main agricultural products—grain, wine, and oil—will be destroyed if they fail to obey their Suzerain (Ruler) God.

Moses reminds the Israelites that the described curses will come upon them if they fail to obey the LORD. These curses will cause absolute misery and poverty in Israel.

Moses continues with the series of curses. He now tells Israel that their Suzerain (Ruler) God will send a foreign nation to besiege the walled cities and devastate the countryside, ruining their lives.

Moses continues the warnings concerning the Israelites violating God’s covenantal laws. In this section, He describes widespread disease and multiple disasters if they fail to live in complete obedience to the LORD.

Moses then described what life would be like in exile, where they would serve other gods, live in constant fear for their lives, and be sold into slavery.

Deuteronomy 28 continues the "script" for a ceremony that is to be conducted upon Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim once Israel has crossed the Jordan River and taken the central portion of Canaan near Shechem, near these two mountains. In scripting this ceremony prior to even entering the land, Moses is making clear the certainty of their success if they will follow God's directions.

Deuteronomy 28 contains two main parts of the "script." The first part contains the blessings Israel will inherit for following faithfully the covenant with God they had just ratified (Deuteronomy 26:17). The second part of Chapter 28 contains cursings Israel will endure if they breach the covenant, and fail to follow the provisions they had agreed to keep (Deuteronomy 26:17).

The first part of Deuteronomy 28 describes the blessings which the Suzerain (Ruler) God will bring upon His vassals (Israel) if they obey His covenantal precepts (vv. 1-14). These blessings include abundant agricultural products, human and animal fertility, good physical and mental health, prosperity, and military victory.

The second part describes the curses the Suzerain God will bring upon the Israelites if they refuse to follow His divine commandments, and breach the covenant they agreed to (vv. 15-68). The curses include crop failure, natural diseases, poor health, military defeat, severe famines leading to cannibalism, and worldwide exile. Israel's behavior in the land of Canaan will determine whether they will be blessed or cursed.

The actual ceremony was performed shortly after Israel entered the land, as described in Joshua 8:30-35. At the point of Deuteronomy 28, the people are still in Moab, listening to Moses, in preparation to enter Canaan.

Deuteronomy 28 can be outlined as follows:

  • The LORD's Blessings (Deuteronomy 28:1-14)
    • Exhortation to Obedience (Deuteronomy 28:1-2)
    • The LORD's Blessings (Deuteronomy 28:3-6)
    • The LORD's Promises (Deuteronomy 28:7-14)
  • The LORD's Curses (Deuteronomy 28:15-68)
    • The Six Curses (Deuteronomy 28:15-19)
    • Various Punishments (Deuteronomy 28:20-24)
    • Physical Trauma (Deuteronomy 28:25-37)
    • Loss of Covenant Fellowship (Deuteronomy 28:38-46)
    • Conquered and Brutalized (Deuteronomy 28:47-57)
    • Loss of All Blessings (Deuteronomy 28:58-68)
