The book of Ephesians, written by the Apostle Paul, who addressed it to believers in the city of Ephesus during his Roman imprisonment around AD 60-62. At that time, the Roman Emperor Nero (reigning AD 54-68) held sway over vast territories, and Paul wrote to encourage and instruct Christians living under this rule. Ephesus was a prominent city on the western coastline of Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey), known for its bustling port and the famous Temple of Artemis. This thriving metropolis was a focal point for both trade and diverse spiritual practices, making it a significant setting for Paul’s letter.

Paul highlights God’s overarching plan of salvation and how, by grace, both Jews and Gentiles become united in Christ as one body. He explains that salvation cannot be earned through human efforts, but is a free gift. Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.” Paul reminds believers that they have been brought near to God and to one another, abolishing hostilities that once separated them. The letter emphasizes that every believer is now a member of God’s household, built upon the foundation of Christ and nourished by the Holy Spirit.

A major theme is the unity of believers, urging them to walk in a manner worthy of their calling and to strive for peace. Paul also addresses the spiritual realities they face, reminding them to clothe themselves with God’s armor and remain vigilant against spiritual opposition. As Ephesians 6:11 says, “Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.” Through this counsel, the Apostle underscores God’s power working within believers and His desire to equip them for righteous living. In this way, the letter calls all followers of Christ to embrace their new identity, live in love and unity, and honor God through faithful obedience.
