Please choose a passage in Joshua 8

After the Israelites’ victory at Ai, Joshua climbs Mount Ebal, where the LORD renewed His covenant with His people inside the Promised Land. This was done in response to the command of Moses in Deuteronomy 27:1-13.

Joshua 8 marks Israel’s renewed assault on the city of Ai after their initial defeat in the previous chapter. The LORD reassures Joshua, saying, “Do not fear or be dismayed. Take all the people of war with you and arise, go up to Ai…” (Joshua 8:1). This time, rather than rushing in without seeking God's will, Joshua follows the His instructions meticulously. The incident shows the continuing plan of Israel’s conquest of Canaan around the late 15th or early 14th century BC, at a time when Joshua was leading the Israelites across the Jordan, establishing a foothold in the Promised Land.

Ai was located just east of Bethel and north of Jerusalem, sitting along a key route into the central hill country of Canaan. Its strategic position made it particularly significant for Israel’s campaign. Joshua, learning from God’s command, sets an ambush behind the city, and when the king of Ai and his forces charge out to pursue Israel, those lying in wait seize the city and set it on fire. Israel then traps and destroys Ai’s forces, capturing its king, ultimately demonstrating how complete obedience to the LORD leads to victory where human strength alone had previously failed.

Following the city’s capture, Joshua builds an altar to the LORD on Mount Ebal and leads the people in reading the blessings and curses of the Law (Joshua 8:30-35). This public reaffirmation establishes a powerful continuation of Israel’s covenant with God, reminding them that success depends on faithful adherence to His Word. The king of Ai, who was taken and executed, highlights the fate of those who oppose the LORD's people and His purposes; it also foreshadows the ultimate triumph of God’s kingdom. Centuries later, Jesus Himself would reiterate the lesson that true strength and authority come from dependence on God’s commands (Matthew 4:4).

In the greater biblical narrative, Joshua 8 stands as a testimony of how trust in God and obedient faith transform defeat into victory. The pattern of human failure, followed by repentance and renewed obedience, finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus, “the author and perfecter of faith” (Hebrews 12:2), who conquers sin and death for all who place their faith in Him. Thus, Joshua’s conquest of Ai encourages believers today to remain steadfast in covenant commitment, confident that the LORD will lead them to victory in His perfect timing.
