Revelation 10 Bible Commentary

Please choose a passage

An angel comes down out of heaven holding a little book. The angel cries out in a loud voice and seven peals of thunder reply, but John is instructed not to record what the thunder said.

The angel proclaims on behalf of God that there will be no further delay and that the mystery of God will be completed.

John eats the book in the hand of the angel, which was bitter in his stomach but sweet in his mouth, before being instructed to prophesy again concerning all peoples and tongues.

This chapter takes place during an interlude between the sixth and seventh trumpets. Much destruction has already taken place. An angel with a little book announces that there will be no more delay and that God’s mystery will soon be completed. This is good news to the saints who have been eagerly awaiting the completion of all things.

Before this proclamation is made we are told that the thunder spoke with a comprehensible voice, but John was instructed not to record the words which the thunder said. This is a reminder that there is still currently some mystery and that God is purposefully concealing information that is not ready to be revealed.

Finally, John is instructed to take the little book from the angel, which tastes sweet in his mouth but is bitter in his stomach. This might serve as a reminder that God’s forthcoming judgement will be sweet truth that creates bitter judgment. This act prepares John to carry out his calling to prophesy again concerning all peoples and nations and tongues: an act we know he carried out because we are reading the recorded words of his vision and prophecy.
