Revelation 12 Commentary

Please choose a passage in Revelation 12

A sign appears in heaven of a woman about to give birth. The woman represents Mary, the mother of Jesus, as well as Israel. Israel will ultimately bloom into a Messianic kingdom. Both are prophesied and are part of God’s plan, and both came or will come about through the birth pangs of labor.

Satan tries to destroy the newborn Child. He is depicted as a dragon who swept away a third of the angels with his tail, indicating that a third of the angels fell with him.

The woman (Israel) gives birth to the Messiah and then flees to the wilderness to be protected by God for three-and-a-half years.

John describes a cosmic battle in heaven between Michael and his angels and the dragon. Michael and his angels prevail and Satan is thrown down to earth.

A statement of victory is declared: salvation has come, and the accuser has been thrown down, overcome by the blood of the Lamb. A warning is also issued to the earth, because Satan now dwells on earth for a limited time.

Satan tries to destroy Israel, but God intervenes to provide a way of escape. Instead, Satan now turns his wrath to the children of the woman, representing Israel, who keep God’s commandments.

A marvelous sign appears in heaven of a woman about to give birth. The woman is clothed in the beauty of the cosmos, and on her head is a crown of twelve stars, representing the twelve tribes of Israel. The woman represents Mary, the mother of Jesus, as well as the nation of Israel. Israel will ultimately bloom into a Messianic kingdom. Both are prophesied and are part of God’s plan, and both came or will come about through the birth pangs of labor. There is great conflict and suffering which will take place before this kingdom is established.

Satan tries to destroy the newborn Child. He is depicted as a great, red, seven-headed, ten-horned dragon. With his tail, he swept away a third of the angels in heaven, indicating that a third of the angels joined his side during his rebellion.

The woman (Israel) gives birth to the Messiah and then flees to the wilderness to be protected by God for three-and-a-half years. Her Son is described as one who will rule the earth with total authority. The Son is taken up to God and put on His throne.

John, the witness to this Revelation, then describes a battle in heaven between the prince angel Michael and his angels against the dragon. The dragon likewise has his own host of angels who fight for him, but they are too weak to defeat Michael’s army. Satan, called the dragon and the serpent of old, the one who deceives all people, is beaten in this heavenly conflict and is cast down to the earth along with his angels.

A loud voice declares victory. The kingdom is fully come in heaven. Deliverance has come to heaven, now that Satan has been toppled from there. Satan was defeated because of Christ’s sacrifice and the faithfulness of believers who testified for Jesus through their words and deeds and were not afraid of death. But heaven’s victory is earth’s persecution, at least temporarily, for now Satan has nowhere to focus his wrath but earth. He lives there for a limited time, and will do all he can to keep his power there. He himself knows his time is short. He is desperate.

Satan tries to destroy Israel, but God intervenes to provide a way of escape. Satan unleashes persecution upon Israel like a flood of water, but the earth swallows the water-his attack fails. God provides for Israel and sustains her. So, Satan turns his wrath to the children of the woman, representing Israel and perhaps other believers, those who keep God’s commandments and are faithful to Christ.
