Revelation 7 Bible Commentary

Please choose a passage

Angels are summoned to hold back the winds as the seal of God is placed on the foreheads of all the bond-servants, which consecrates them to the Lord and sets them apart. People from all twelve tribes of Israel are sealed, although the makeup of the tribe list has some notable replacements.

People from every nation, tribe, and language stand before the Lamb in the throne room, along with the angels, creatures, and elders. They worship God.

One of the elders explains that the martyrs dressed in white robes who worship God are there in the throne room because they have come out of the great tribulation and have washed their robes white in the blood of the Lamb.

Now that the first five of six seals on the scroll have been broken, God seals 144,000 people from the twelve tribes of Israel. The make-up of the list of tribes is notably different from the original tribes, and it appears that this sealing is to protect this particular group of people from the particular plague that is about to be unleashed. Nothing happens without God’s authority, so He is setting aside this group to be protected. Then, all people and angels and elders and creatures join in praising God, proclaiming that all things are coming to completion. Finally, bond-servants who have come out of the great tribulation are revealed in their white robes and will receive blessings that are the exact opposite of everything they experienced in the tribulation.
